Stephanie Holan 00:02
I'm Stephanie Holan and this is Etta Alldredge. And it's still ticking. There, OK. This is tape
number five, and it's February 11, 1998 and it is now almost 4:00. So-- oh, the last question I
was-- or not the last question I was gonna ask, but I was gonna also ask you about-- because
when you were younger, you were really close to your dad--

Etta Alldredge 00:33
Oh yes.

Stephanie Holan 00:33
--it sounded like. And so when you moved away, were you-- did you still stay really close with
your father?

Etta Alldredge 00:40
Oh yes. Oh yeah, I went back every time I got a chance [laughs] to visit him.

Stephanie Holan 00:46
Yeah.

Etta Alldredge 00:46
And he came-- he'd come to Colville, and he'd come see me in Colville.

Stephanie Holan 00:51
Yeah.

Etta Alldredge 00:52
Yeah.

Stephanie Holan 00:52
And did-- and when did your father pass away?

Etta Alldredge 00:58

Well, we went on a trip to California, down to Coos-- San Raf-- see. My brother and I and his
wife and Ward, we decided to take a trip together. So we moved-- went down to California. And
while we was down there, my father took sick and passed away, and I didn't get to go back to his
funeral. Because we-- he passed away just just a few days after I got down there.

Stephanie Holan 01:34
Yeah, aww.

Etta Alldredge 01:38
He was a 85, 86, something like that.

Stephanie Holan 01:44
And was it just something sudden? Had he had any health problems?

Etta Alldredge 02:02
Can't remember [laughs].

Stephanie Holan 02:06
But you were still fairly young when your father passed away.

Etta Alldredge 02:12
Well, had all my children, yes.

Stephanie Holan 02:13
You had all your-- so he got to meet all of his grandchildren.

Etta Alldredge 02:18
Yes.

Stephanie Holan 02:19
He did. And then were-- and were you as close to your mother as you were to your father? She
was a standbyer?

Etta Alldredge 02:23
Oh yes, yes, oh yes. Mother was just [?standbyer?]. Yeah. I mean, she was always there with us.

Stephanie Holan 02:38
And was she-- did she pass away after your father, or?

Etta Alldredge 02:44
No, she passed away first.

Stephanie Holan 02:45
Oh, she did?

Etta Alldredge 02:46

Yes, she was staying with me. She broke down both her hip, and after she come out of the
hospital, I took her into my home in Seattle. I had her about three years.

Stephanie Holan 02:58
But your dad wasn't there?

Etta Alldredge 03:00
Huh?

Stephanie Holan 03:00
Your dad didn't live there?

Etta Alldredge 03:01
No, he lived in-- he was in the home place up in Rice, Washington [inaudible].

Stephanie Holan 03:05
Oh, OK.

Etta Alldredge 03:06
Yeah.

Stephanie Holan 03:07
And then so you took your mother in for three years, and then she--

Etta Alldredge 03:12
Had a stroke.

Stephanie Holan 03:13
Oh, she had stroke. And then she passed--

Etta Alldredge 03:16
Yeah. I think my father passed away with a stroke, too.

Stephanie Holan 03:17
Wow. Because I remember I was gonna-- because I know you were close with your your father.
It didn't even dawn on me to ask you when it happened to him [laughs].

Etta Alldredge 03:30
Well, I never thought about saying anything.

Stephanie Holan 03:37
And so now it's you and your older sister, and both of your brothers have passed away? Is that
right? You have two brothers.

Etta Alldredge 03:52
Now, what? [Inaudible.] Oh, yes, yes, yes, they passed away.

Stephanie Holan 03:57
They passed away?

Etta Alldredge 03:57
Yeah.

Stephanie Holan 03:57
So it's just you and your older sister now?

Etta Alldredge 03:59
Yeah.

Stephanie Holan 04:00
And when did your brothers pass away?

Etta Alldredge 04:03
Well, one had a cancer, and he was quite young. No, he was-- his family was growing. But he
lived in Chicago. But then he came out here, while he was out here, why, he passed away
[inaudible] cancer. Passed away [?of that?].

Stephanie Holan 04:30
That's hard. Cancer is a hard one.

Etta Alldredge 04:33
My brother, he was living in Spokane, and he passed away, I think of a heart attack, too.

Stephanie Holan 04:42
So did Winton have cancer?

Etta Alldredge 04:45
No. He did have a heart attack.

Stephanie Holan 04:48
He had a heart attack? So it was your other brother that had the cancer?

Etta Alldredge 04:52
And while I'm thinking about him, my grandfather Moe, he carried a bullet right over his heart
all the rest of his life. I forgot to mention that.

Stephanie Holan 05:04
A bullet?

Etta Alldredge 05:05
Yeah, and they didn't operate in those days.

Stephanie Holan 05:08
Oh, wow.

Etta Alldredge 05:09
But never bothered him.

Stephanie Holan 05:11
Never bugged him at all?

Etta Alldredge 05:12
No.

Stephanie Holan 05:13
That's amazing. You have a little list here. What's on your list?

Etta Alldredge 05:18
Huh?

Stephanie Holan 05:18
Your list?

Etta Alldredge 05:19
Oh.

Stephanie Holan 05:19
Did you make a list?

Etta Alldredge 05:19
Oh, that's my first one, no I didn't.

Stephanie Holan 05:21
Oh, that's your first list? [Laughs.]

Etta Alldredge 05:24
Oh, I put down a date or something, because I got them from my daughter, so maybe she can tell
you about that [laughs] and I wrote it down.

Stephanie Holan 05:37
So I guess one question that I would like to ask would be, how do you want to be remembered
when you-- when your time comes, and, you know, we're all gonna...? How would you like to be
remembered?

Etta Alldredge 05:55
Oh, just like I am now, I guess, [inaudible] I have nothing. There's nothing.

Stephanie Holan 06:02

Nothing? [Laughs] [?Just?] sweet little Etta.

Etta Alldredge 06:06
Yeah, just when I-- of course, I've got my arrangements all made and everything, my funeral and
everything.

Stephanie Holan 06:13
Oh, you have?

Etta Alldredge 06:13
Oh, yes.

Stephanie Holan 06:18
And then what do you consider to be the most important part of your life?

Etta Alldredge 06:36
Well, it's all important. I can't think of anything, because I enjoyed life so well. I enjoyed my
daughters. I enjoyed my husband and I-- there was nothing, everything, any sadness, or I never
lost any folks, or nothing.

Stephanie Holan 06:59
That's beautiful, I think.

Etta Alldredge 07:01
Huh?

Stephanie Holan 07:02
That's beautiful.

Etta Alldredge 07:03
Is that all right?

Stephanie Holan 07:04
Yeah, you can-- it's your-- anything you want it to be. And then I was gonna-- the last time I was
here, we were looking-- or the first time I came, we looked at some pictures.

Etta Alldredge 07:16
Yeah.

Stephanie Holan 07:17
And that-- and then, at one point in the interview, we got to pictures that were more recent. I said
we could--

Etta Alldredge 07:23
Oh, oh, yes.

Stephanie Holan 07:24
--that we would talk about.

Etta Alldredge 07:25
Yeah.

Stephanie Holan 07:28
Do you want to talk about those a little bit? Was it this one? The older pictures were in?

Etta Alldredge 07:37
Yeah. Yeah.

Stephanie Holan 07:38
Oh, these are some of the-- hi, [inaudible]. These are some of the... I mean, the more recent
pictures, I mean.

Etta Alldredge 07:48
Oh, the more recent ones.

Stephanie Holan 07:50
Here we go. Here we go. Oh.

Etta Alldredge 07:58
That's my husband's family there. This is my home, where I was raised.

Stephanie Holan 08:11
This is Kettle Falls?

Etta Alldredge 08:15
No, that's-- it was out in the country.

Stephanie Holan 08:19
Oh, OK.

Etta Alldredge 08:29
This is the barn.

Stephanie Holan 08:38
So--

Etta Alldredge 08:39
Yeah, this is the family, the whole family.

Stephanie Holan 08:42
This is Ward's family?

Etta Alldredge 08:43
Yeah.

Stephanie Holan 08:44
Are you in this picture?

Etta Alldredge 08:45
Yeah, I think so. All were there, but one brother wasn't there that day.

Stephanie Holan 08:56
Wow.

Etta Alldredge 08:58
That's Wanda, I think. I was up here somewhere. I don't know.

Stephanie Holan 09:08
I can't find you. Let's look. You can tell me about things. So is this you?

Etta Alldredge 09:19
Yes, with my sister.

Stephanie Holan 09:21
And your sister.

Etta Alldredge 09:21
We went to go dance together.

Stephanie Holan 09:26
And then this is you?

Etta Alldredge 09:27
Yes. That's my sister in law.

Stephanie Holan 09:31
That's your sister in law.

Etta Alldredge 09:33
This is my granddaughter.

Stephanie Holan 09:35
Which one?

Etta Alldredge 09:36
JoAnn.

Stephanie Holan 09:37

JoAnn, OK.

Etta Alldredge 09:38
And this is my-- this is my grandson.

Stephanie Holan 09:42
Your grandson.

Etta Alldredge 09:42
Paul. They live in Florida.

Stephanie Holan 09:47
OK.

Etta Alldredge 09:48
This is me and the girls.

Stephanie Holan 09:50
And this is Nan, and that's Connie, and there's Laura, and there's you. Nancy looks so different
[laughs].

Etta Alldredge 09:57
[Inaudible.] This is Wanda.

Stephanie Holan 10:11
There's Wanda.

Etta Alldredge 10:13
Barbara.

Stephanie Holan 10:16
And that's Laura.

Etta Alldredge 10:18
This is this Barbara. This is my grandson. He-- this is the one that lives in Florida.

Stephanie Holan 10:22
Oh yeah?

Etta Alldredge 10:25
And this is the one that lives in Alaska, his wife and family.

Stephanie Holan 10:39
There's you.

Etta Alldredge 10:40

Yeah. This is one of my neighbors, and she was 78 years old, and she's [inaudible] [laughs].
Here's my father and his family.

Stephanie Holan 11:00
Where are they?

Etta Alldredge 11:02
This my father.

Stephanie Holan 11:03
That's your father.

Etta Alldredge 11:05
This is twins. This is my uncle. And this is my grandmother.

Stephanie Holan 11:17
And then--

Etta Alldredge 11:19

Stephanie Holan 11:21
OK.

Etta Alldredge 11:21
This is Wanda. I haven't looked at them for years. This is one from Ruby's wedding. And they
had a big [inaudible]. Ruby worked in this. Where she married, she worked in here.

Stephanie Holan 11:45
That's [?Boeing Bunny?]?

Etta Alldredge 11:49
There's a bunny. [Inaudible.]

Stephanie Holan 11:59
Is that when Mount Saint Helens blew up?

Etta Alldredge 12:02
[Inaudible.]

Stephanie Holan 12:05
Where were you in Mount Saint Helens blew up?

Etta Alldredge 12:07
Oh, I was in Seattle, living in Seattle.

Stephanie Holan 12:10
Living in Seattle? Could you see the ash from the city?

Etta Alldredge 12:12
Oh, no.

Stephanie Holan 12:13
No?

Etta Alldredge 12:13
Oh yeah, oh, yes [inaudible] yes. You could see it better when you go to Spokane. You can still
see it if you go to Spokane.

Stephanie Holan 12:20
Oh, really?

Etta Alldredge 12:20
Alongside the road.

Stephanie Holan 12:21
Wow.

Etta Alldredge 12:28
My granddaughter had a family reunion. And this is my daughter [?Barbara?], my granddaughter
[inaudible]. And this is Dorothy and her husband, that's my granddaughter.

Stephanie Holan 12:46
There's you. And Dorothy-- this is your sister?

Etta Alldredge 12:50
Yes.

Stephanie Holan 12:51
Your older sister? OK. Which brother is this?

Etta Alldredge 12:52
And this is [?Beulah?] and his wife. I mean, that's my brother and his wife. That's Winton, I
think. Winton? [?That's his wife?], yeah. There's-- oh, this is what I saw one time. Nancy and
Connie and I was together, and we saw that U--

Stephanie Holan 13:25
You saw a UF-- Where were you?

Etta Alldredge 13:27
We was up in the cabin up there where Wanda is now.

Stephanie Holan 13:31
OK.

Etta Alldredge 13:32
We were sleeping outdoors. And this thing came over, and just exactly just as
[inaudible][?Summers?] saw same thing, and she wrote, so I cut it out, because it's the same
thing that we saw.

Stephanie Holan 13:47
What was it?

Etta Alldredge 13:48
Huh?

Stephanie Holan 13:49
What did it look like?

Etta Alldredge 13:50
Well, [inaudible] all lookin' up at the stars. And this thing came over and had a-- it was kind of a
pinkish looking thing. And then it had light-- the light was in the windows. You can see it had
windows, but we only saw it for just a minute or two and it was gone.

Stephanie Holan 14:12
Was it scary, or was it kind of...?

Etta Alldredge 14:14
Well, we knew it was a USO.

Stephanie Holan 14:17
A UFO?

Etta Alldredge 14:18
Yeah.

Stephanie Holan 14:18
Wow.

Etta Alldredge 14:19
So Connie won't talk about it, because she thinks people think that you're crazy.

Stephanie Holan 14:25
[Laughs.]

Etta Alldredge 14:25
But we saw it, just as plain as day.

Stephanie Holan 14:28
You saw a-- see, now that's amazing.

Etta Alldredge 14:30
Yeah. And the neighbors, they-- well, they said, "Why didn't you call us?" It was 11 o'clock at
night, and we didn't have time. It just came over there, came right out over a saddle on this
mountain. It came right over that and went right over the lake and disappeared. We didn't have
time to call anybody to look at it.

Stephanie Holan 14:55
That's cool. That's very cool.

Etta Alldredge 14:58
Yeah, I saw it with my own eyes.

Stephanie Holan 15:01
See, that's not something that happens to everybody every day, in their everyday lives. So then
this one...

Etta Alldredge 15:07
Oh, yeah, this is when-- oh, when I was in the hospital. I had a [inaudible] surgery. This is
Dorothy and me. [?I mean--?]

Stephanie Holan 15:23
That's you and Wanda--

Etta Alldredge 15:26
And Laura Rae--

Stephanie Holan 15:28
--and Laura.

Etta Alldredge 15:29
--and Connie. Or-- yeah, Kelly. This is my sister. Now this is one of my birthdays.

Stephanie Holan 15:32
Kelly. Up at-- in Kenmore?

Etta Alldredge 15:40
No-- yes-- no-- yes, I was living in Kenmore.

Stephanie Holan 15:44
You were living in Kenmore?

Etta Alldredge 15:45

And this is another family. This is taken in my daughter's home [?at one?] time. No, this was
taken in-- yeah. This was all [inaudible] Chicago. This was taken in Chicago. This was taken in
[inaudible] home

Stephanie Holan 16:15
Is this you and Ward?

Etta Alldredge 16:17
No, that's [inaudible] and my husband.

Stephanie Holan 16:20
Oh, OK.

Etta Alldredge 16:20
This is JoAnn when she was a baby, and this is my Ruby.

Stephanie Holan 16:28
OK. And then this is you and your daughter Wanda.

Etta Alldredge 16:34
And then this is me and--

Stephanie Holan 16:36
Nancy.

Etta Alldredge 16:36
--Nancy. This was taken in Chicago. These are my grandchildren-- great-grandchildren.

Stephanie Holan 16:43
Your great-grandchildren.

Etta Alldredge 16:44
No, not great- ones, just grandchildren.

Stephanie Holan 16:46
Just grandchildren.

Etta Alldredge 16:49
And then Barbara went on this big ship, on a trip. And this is Laura Rae on her wedding day. I
think that's Kelly, I think, I don't know. This is my grand-- or my [inaudible]. Kelly.

Stephanie Holan 17:26
OK.

Etta Alldredge 17:30
This was my brother.

Stephanie Holan 17:30
Is that Winton?

Etta Alldredge 17:34
This is Winton.

Stephanie Holan 17:36
OK, who's this? Is that a friend?

Etta Alldredge 17:39
A friend.

Stephanie Holan 17:40
And that's you. Is that you?

Etta Alldredge 17:43
Yeah, I guess [they laugh]. And this is my sister. This is her.

Stephanie Holan 18:00
And that's you and her?

Etta Alldredge 18:01
Uh-huh.

Stephanie Holan 18:04
And where is this?

Etta Alldredge 18:06
This is taken in my home.

Stephanie Holan 18:09
At your-- in Kenmore? One hundred two. Wow.

Etta Alldredge 18:10
Yeah, in Kenmore. And then that's her up there on that-- 102. And Kelly Rae, and my sister
again. [Inaudible] sister, except [?her little?] brother in law. This is Laura Rae on her wedding.
And this is my husband.

Stephanie Holan 18:52
That's your husband?

Etta Alldredge 19:05
I don't know [inaudible]. This is all Laura Rae's family.

Stephanie Holan 19:11

Laura Rae?

Etta Alldredge 19:12
This is my daughter. And there-- no-- and this is Jimmy, and he [inaudible].

Stephanie Holan 19:23
Your grandson?

Etta Alldredge 19:25
And this is my sister's husband. I guess that [?might have been?] me. That's JoAnn. These are
all-- I think these are all the kids. Don't ask me to tell them all [laughs].

Stephanie Holan 20:00
October 16th, 1887? Oh, oh.

Etta Alldredge 20:00
And that's that [inaudible] girl that fell down that-- [Inaudible] there's more.

Stephanie Holan 20:14
Oh, that-- the hole in the ground? And she got stuck down there?

Etta Alldredge 20:27
Mm-hmm, that's her, yeah.

Stephanie Holan 20:28
Wow. So these are your pictures. Well, is there anything else that you want to tell me about
yourself?

Etta Alldredge 20:40
No, there's nothing. Only I told you that we had-- picked cherries, I had a big cherry orchard,
didn't I?

Stephanie Holan 20:49
Mm-hmm. And that you picked cherries in the orchard.

Etta Alldredge 20:51
Yeah. And did I tell you about how we canned them? Well, Dad had a man working for him,
and the wheat was just about ready to be cut. So he took my-- put him and us kids all in the
orchard picking cherries. So-- and after we got-- and he went with us, and he [?picked?] and got
[inaudible]. Then he went back to the house with Mama. My mama sits home at the house and
she cooked the cherries. We had our pitter. We'd take the seed out. And then she cooked the
cherries, and then and put them in the jars, and then he'd tighten the lids on them, seal them up.
You know? And I got to thinking afterwards, all this things happened; it impressed me. We
might have picked cherries time after time again, but I don't remember. Only just that one time.

Stephanie Holan 20:55

No. Just the one time?

Etta Alldredge 21:52
It must have impressed to me at that time. And then I-- they took me out, and I had to put-- I had
[inaudible]. I could get in the jar and wash the jars.

Stephanie Holan 22:03
So you washed and pitted, and your dad put them in, and your mom cooked them up? So it was
like a little team.

Etta Alldredge 22:10
Oh yep, we we canned about 100 quarts that day.

Stephanie Holan 22:13
Oh wow.

Etta Alldredge 22:14
Oh yes.

Stephanie Holan 22:15
That's a lot of cherries.

Etta Alldredge 22:17
Oh, we had several cherry trees, and they would just loaded it. But now we never-- I don't
remember us ever doing that again because, but we always had cherries in cans, so that must
have impressed me more than ever, and I remembered it.

Stephanie Holan 22:34
Yeah. Well, maybe that was-- that sounds like something fun to be with your parents and
canning cherries.

Etta Alldredge 22:44
Oh, yeah, we'd spend all day cherries. But [inaudible]-- impressed me, I'll just say, I must have
impressed me, because I remember that.

Stephanie Holan 23:01
So you-- your whole life, you've been very close to your family.

Etta Alldredge 23:05
Oh, yes.

Stephanie Holan 23:06
Very close and very involved with your family. And now you have three...

Etta Alldredge 23:14
Three great-great- ones.

Stephanie Holan 23:15
Three great-great- ones.

Etta Alldredge 23:17
Yeah.

Stephanie Holan 23:18
And a million great- ones.

Etta Alldredge 23:20
Huh?

Stephanie Holan 23:20
And how many great-grandchildren do you have?

Etta Alldredge 23:24
Sixteen grand-- 16 grandchildren, and then three great-great-grandchildren.

Stephanie Holan 23:30
Wow.

Etta Alldredge 23:32
And the younger one is just about two months old. But my other grandson, has two children, so
that makes three.

Stephanie Holan 23:44
See, it's amazing that from one woman have come so many more, you know? Without you, there
would not be all these little people running around.

Etta Alldredge 24:00
[Laughs] [inaudible].

Stephanie Holan 24:03
I think that that's amazing. I think it's amazing.

Etta Alldredge 24:10
Have you any uncles and aunts or anything?

Stephanie Holan 24:13
I do, but nobody w-- everybody passes away fairly young in my family.

Etta Alldredge 24:22
Oh.

Stephanie Holan 24:23

Like, I think our oldest-- the oldest relative I had was on my father's side, and he lives till he was
about 93.

Etta Alldredge 24:31
That's a pretty good age.

Stephanie Holan 24:34
And, like, my grandfather's only 65.

Etta Alldredge 24:37
Oh, is that all?

Stephanie Holan 24:38
And he's in the convalescence home, and he's had three strokes. And he's had one of his legs
amputated.

Etta Alldredge 24:45
Oh. Yeah, I guess Nancy told me something about that, yeah.

Stephanie Holan 24:48
So--

Etta Alldredge 24:50
But you didn't have no uncles and aunts?

Stephanie Holan 24:55
Mm-hmm. I have-- my mother has a younger brother and a younger sister, and then my dad has
an older brother and an older sister.

Etta Alldredge 25:06
There wasn't a big family then-- there must not have been very big-- I mean--

Stephanie Holan 25:10
It's big, but everybody's back home in Minnesota.

Etta Alldredge 25:13
Oh yes. You don't get to see them very often.

Stephanie Holan 25:15
So we don't get to see them very often, no. But it sounds like your family's all pretty--

Etta Alldredge 25:20
Yeah, yeah, they're all living around here. We've been pretty lucky about that.

Stephanie Holan 25:23

Mm-hmm. And so it's been good for you, because you've got to see everybody, and have the new
additions and all the new marriages, and...

Etta Alldredge 25:33
Yeah, and all the grandchildren and everything. Yes, I've seen every one of my grandchildren
graduate from high school.

Stephanie Holan 25:40
You've gone to every one?

Etta Alldredge 25:41
Every one. And then I've seen them younger than-- I've seen graduate from school, but now I
haven't saw--

Stephanie Holan 26:00
Jenny.

Etta Alldredge 26:00
Jenny [inaudible]. They're still going to school.

Stephanie Holan 26:04
Jenny's almost done, though.

Etta Alldredge 26:06
Yes, she is.

Stephanie Holan 26:08
So that'll be another one.

Etta Alldredge 26:11
[?I send?] every one of my grandchildren graduated from high school.

Stephanie Holan 26:16
That's pretty amazing, because my grandmother wasn't at my high school graduation.

Etta Alldredge 26:20
No, she was back there, wasn't she?

Stephanie Holan 26:22
She was back in Minnesota. So that's ama-- it's great that you've been so involved in the lives of
your grandchildren.

Etta Alldredge 26:32
And that's-- I saw them all graduate from grade school, too.

Stephanie Holan 26:39

You did?

Etta Alldredge 26:39
Yeah, every one of them.

Stephanie Holan 26:42
So do you like living up here with Nan?

Etta Alldredge 26:44
Oh, yes, I like it here.

Stephanie Holan 26:46
[Inaudible]? Yeah, you like your little-- because you've got a great little house here.

Etta Alldredge 26:50
Yes, it's fine. Well, I've lived in that old trailer, and I sold it and he-- after he-- a man bought it,
and after he moved in, when he took [inaudible] all over. I mean, he added to it and... I mean,
build a little ho-- I didn't have a little house to keep my tools in or anything. I didn't gar-- I wasn't
making a garden, or anything like that. So but he did all inside and everything. He's still living
[inaudible].

Stephanie Holan 27:24
Oh, really? Wow. I don't know what else to ask you. I'm trying to think. I mean, you've lived
such a whole life.

Etta Alldredge 27:40
Well, there's lots of little things that happened that I forgot all about [laughs], especially today.

Stephanie Holan 27:50
Well, that's OK. Should we call it a day?

Etta Alldredge 27:56
Yeah, I guess so [laughs].

Stephanie Holan 27:58
[Laughs] Should we call it a day?
